Back in the day before the Second World War, people were using coconut oil as cooking oil all over the world, especially in the U.S. Nothing happened until the day where the Second World War began.

Here's the turning point that affects the truth about coconut oil.

Since then, people were trying to stay away from coconut oil. They thought it was unhealthy, and they turned to use other oils, especially soybean oil.

Why did they change their mind?

What happened to them?

Well, the story happened during two periods...

1. Greater East Asia War

During the Greater East Asia War (1941 - 1945), the Japanese army occupied Philippines and other Pacific islands. They also cut off the route where the Filipino used to transport coconut oil to the United States.

Many food manufacturers and restaurants in the U.S. were struggling to find another oil to replace a lack of coconut oil.

The lack of cooking oils pushed them to develop polyunsaturated oils in order to replace the coconut oil. They were soon in a production of many different kinds of vegetable oil, especially soybean oil.

Unbelievable! This project brought a huge benefit to the U.S. Vegetable Oil Industry. However, what they did to keep their business growing was to hide the truth about coconut oil!

2. Tropical Oils War

After the Second World War calmed down, coconut oil was available in the U.S. market again. So it was in competition with Polyunsaturated oils, which was just developed.

In 1960s, the research reported that some of the saturated oils, such as lard and hydrogenated coconut oil, will increase high blood cholesterol. They believed it is a cause of heart disease.

The Truth about Coconut Oil - Soybean Oil

The American Soybean Association (ASA) took this opportunity to blame all Saturated oils. They led people to believe all types of Saturated oils are unhealthy.

Of course, they encouraged people to avoid Saturated oils including coconut oil and palm oil (as known as Tropical Oils).

On the other hand, they tried to promote Polyunsaturated oils, especially soybean oil, with the reason that they are healthier than Saturated oils.

Soybean Oil Plays a Big Role

In 1980s, ASA was trying hard to encourage the Americans to consume soybean oil. They accused coconut oil as what causes of heart disease.

The campaign went beyond expectation.

Many people were afraid of health problems, and quit coconut oil.

In the 1990s, the consumption of coconut oil was next to nothing.

Finally, ASA succeeded. The winners were the soybean farmers and the U.S. soybean industries. And the losers were the coconut farmers and the coconut oil industries.

However, nothing lies the truth about coconut oil.

What the Americans received from taking soybean oil were the obvious weight gain and the higher risk of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity, etc. Certain cases occurred significantly soon after taking soybean oil.

Just like the Americans, the other people around the world who take soybean oil were getting into health problems as well.

Even today, many people still believe coconut oil is unhealthy, particularly the cause of heart disease.

The one who came out to fight against scientific distortion due to the huge benefit of the American vegetable oil industries was Dr. Mary G. Enig.

Enig is a Director of Nutritional Sciences Division, Enig Associates, Inc.

She is the owner of the book called "Know Your Fats : The Complete Primer for Understanding the Nutrition of Fats, Oils and Cholesterol".

She appeared to find out the truth about coconut oil, so she decided to write this book.

In this book, she talked about the information error and medical distortion.

She is also talking about the role of mass media that is responsible for all saturated oils.


She mentioned that the Tropical Oils such as coconut oil and palm oil have been blamed as the culprit diet for decades. This is due to the economic push from American vegetable oil industries.

In fact, epidemiology found that Tropical Oils have turned out to be the protector of heart disease.

In 1981, there were studies about the Pacific Islanders, who consume a high amount of coconut oil daily. And the studies found that no one has a heart disease at all.
